Nape rules out opposition role as he hands over office

Former Information, Culture, Arts and Sports minister Nape Nnauye has said he is not joining the opposition.

In Dodoma yesterday, he officially handed over office to his successor, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe, and pledged continued loyalty to President Magufuli.

Dr Mwakyembe, who was shifted to a new ministry from the Ministry of Constitutional and Legal Affairs also handed over office to his successor, Prof Palamagamba Kabudi.

The handover ceremonies were held in Dodoma, where the government has relocated its headquarters.

Speaking during the ceremony, Dr Mwakyembe requested Mr Nnauye to work closely with him and share his experience.

“I promise you that I will continue with all the good work you have done during your tenure of office. You spearheaded major reforms in the ministry to the extent that many people have started understanding that the ministry has a crucial role to play in the country’s goals to attain the industrial economy,” said Dr Mwakyembe.

For his part, Mr Nnauye thanked President Magufuli for trusting him during the last 15 months, which he served as a cabinet minister. He also assured Dr Mwakyembe of his cooperation.

“I will keep on supporting President Magufuli’s endeavours to transform the country because of the respect he showed me. I will remain a loyal CCM member and continue being a good and law abiding citizen. Those who think Nape will defect to another political party shouldn’t waste their time because that will never happen,” assured Mr Nnauye.

President Magufuli made a minor reshuffle in his cabinet, which saw Mr Nnauye dropped.

The latter was removed just a day after a report of a five-member committee to investigate the night raid of Clouds Media Group (CMG) by Dar es Salaam regional commissioner Paul Makonda was presented to him. Mr Makonda had attempted to force presenters to air a video clip of his liking.

Mr Nnauye visited Clouds Media after the incident and strongly condemned the RC’s action and formed the team, whose report he said would be presented to President Magufuli, Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa.
