Police told to deliver, deter crime

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Simon Siro has warned police officers against corruption and other malpractices this year. Instead, he said they should work hard to contain crimes.

Mr Siro gave the warning, when he met with some senior police officers from three regions of Unguja Island, where he also directed them to perform their duties professionally.

“We have managed to reduce criminal incidents in the country and we need to maintain it. Discharge your duties by abiding by the code of ethics and avoid any kind of corruption,” said the IGP, who also urged the officers and their bosses to observe financial discipline even, when it was for private spending.

“You must fear stealing or misusing public funds like being scared of leprosy. The funds you receive must be for the intended programme. But you should also avoid reckless spending because life and the position you are holding are temporary. You need to save for tomorrow!”

Mr Siro commended the police officers for the job well done in 2018 as he looked forward to better performance this year by ensuring all areas in the United Republic of Tanzania remained safe for both local people and foreigners.

He said his office had been working closely with the government to improve a working environment for the police, including their welfare and that they must deliver.
