TTCL TO UNDERGO HUGE MANAGEMENT OVERHAUL
THE state owned telecom operator -
Tanzania Telecommunicat ions Company Limited (TTCL) is set to undergo
huge structural, technical and management overhaul to strengthen its
market position in the region.
TTCL Board Chairman, Prof Tolly Mbwete,
said on Friday shortly after the firm was announced winner of the 40th
Dar es Salaam Trade Fair on Information and Communications Technology
(ICT) category. Prof Mbwete said the new reforms would be proposed to
the government later this year for approval.
“We want to improve our service delivery
across the country, but structural, technical and management
transformation cannot be underestimated,” he said. Recalling; “It is
just recently the government retained its shares from Airtel, this also
necessitates reforms.”
He further observed the legislation
-Tanzania Telecommunications Act, 1993 which institutes the
establishment of the oldest and largest fixed line telecommunications
company was outdated.
“We want the government to make
amendments in the legislation to allow the firm become more competitive
in the local and international market,” Mr Mbwete said at the trade
fair.
According to the chairman, the telecom
operator had made some formal recommendation to be submitted later to
the government for review. But, the TTCL Chairman warned the plan under
review would be a white elephant should the government fail to invest
accordingly in technology and structural change of the firm.
TTCL Chief Executive Officer, Dr
Kamugisha Kazaura, said the firm’s plan for transformation way back in
2014 was now working with maltinternational companies to realise its
target.
